Madurai youths provide food to those in home isolation

MADURAI: Vaa Nanbaa, a Madurai-based youth forum, has been providing vegetable biryani along with a boiled egg to those affected by Covid-19 and undergoing home isolation in the city. The youth forum, which is known for its work towards environment and keeping the public places clean, has been distributing around 200 packets of food every day for the past 10 days. Apart from people in home isolation, relatives of patients admitted in government Rajaji hospital and homeless people are also benefitting from the efforts. Around 30 volunteers of the forum gather every Sunday to take up activities such as cleaning a public place and planting tree saplings in the city. Ever since the second wave, they stopped other works and started focusing on people affected by Covid-19. They also volunteer whenever the Madurai Corporation is in need of helping hands to reach out to the residents. M C Saravanan, secretary of Vaa Nanbaa, said “We heard that people infected by the virus are not keen on having their food. Many people in home isolation do not even prepare food. We thought of reaching out to them and serve food. We decided to add an egg since protein is good for such patients,” he said. More than 20 volunteers from Vaa Nanbaa are now involved in sales of vegetables along with the corporation. They also distributed immunity booster kit introduced by the civic body a few weeks ago at a nominal cost of Rs 50. “Residents saved contact numbers of our volunteers last year. They started calling us for vegetables. The corporation is taking steps to fulfill the demands. People can also call up 8428425000 to directly contact the civic body for vegetables and other requirements,” Saravanan said.
