(AFP) More than half of the 25 million Australian populations live in the southeast of the country from Adelaide to Sydney to Sydney.
“We do not have a report about serious injury, or worse, and it is very good news and we hope that good news will continue,” said Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Washington.
“It can be a very disturbing event, this earthquake.
They are very rare events in Australia and as a result, I am sure people will be quite depressed and disturbed.” The earthquake is relatively unusually in the east of Australia’s population because of its position in the midst of Indo-Australia’s tectonic plates, according to Australian geoscience.
The earthquake on Wednesday was measured higher than the deadly tremor of the country, 5.6 in Newcastle in 1989, which resulted in 13 deaths.
Mansfield Mayor, Mark Holcombe, said he was in his home office on his farm when the earthquake struck and ran out for salvation.
“I have been in an earthquake abroad before and seems to go longer than I experienced before,” Holcombe told ABC.
“Another thing that surprised me was how noisy was.
It was truly a roar like a big truck passed.” He knew there was no serious damage near the epicenter of the earthquake, although some residents reported problems with telecommunications.
There is no tsunami threat issued for land Australia, island or region, the country’s meteorological bureau said in a statement.
The earthquake presents a potential disorder for the expected anti-locking protest in Melbourne on Wednesday, which will be the third day of the riots that have reached the level of violence and police response.
