Nagpur: Maharashtra has become the global country of India and 12th to join the Under2 coalition – the global community of state and regional governments that are committed to ambitious climate action in accordance with the Paris agreement.
In recent years, the country has witnessed a loss of severe life and serious economic disorders due to the increasing impact of climate change in the past few decades.
It also has the highest number of non-totaling cities in the country where air pollution rates do not meet the standards set.
By joining the coalition, the country aims to implement a dedicated climate action in line with the Paris Agreement and reduce regional vulnerability to natural disasters.
Formed in 2015, the Under2 coalition is a global community of nearly 230 governments, with its members representing more than 1.3 billion people and 43% of the global economy.
Apart from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana and West Bengal are also part of the coalition.
Announced collaboration on Thursday, the Minister of Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray said that the state is committed to making resilient areas with ambitious and accelerated actions.
“We take concrete green steps to coordinate with other ministries, directly from energy to tourism, to overcome climate change.
When we increase our efforts, we are happy to join the Under2 coalition and collaborate with the states and other regions that handle environmental challenges throughout the world.

According to the study by the Energy Council, Environment and Water (CEE), Maharashtra facing high climate risk with a seven-fold increase in frequency Drought events and six-fold increases in extreme floods in the last five decades in five decades.
