Nagpur: Gangster-Turn-Politician Arun Gawli, currently serving a life sentence in the Nagpur Center prison in connection with a murder case, is pursuing a degree course in art from an open university in Maharashtra, an official said on Tuesday.
Gawli is registered for the Bachelor of Art (BA) courses from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra based in Nashik (YCMou) in 2019 after he topped the examination conducted on the ‘Thought of Gandhian’ by NGOs in 2017, said Anup Inspektendent Kumre.
However, in BA courses, Gawli failed in one subject each in the first and second years.
He managed to pursue the last year of the course under the ATKT provisions (allowed to maintain the provisions), the official said.
Atkt is the process in the education system to allow pre-graduation students and graduation courses to learn in the next class if they fail in several subjects.
Kumre said the detainees were allowed to register for various courses from YCMou and Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou).
Gawli has presented a life sentence for the murder of Shiv Sena Corporator Kamarakar Jamsandekar and has been behind the bar since 2008.
A total of 229 prisoners of convicts in the Nagpur Center prison, including Gawli, are currently pursuing various courses – from BA to Masters Business Administration (MBA) , said another official.
From them, 157 inmates, including 14 women, pursued Ba from Ymmou, while 72 inmates including two women had registered with Ignou.
The murder case convicted in prison was also chasing the MBA, the official said.
The prisoners got books by post from the university, he said.
The exam for inmates was carried out in the Nagpur Center prison, which was notified as an examination center by two universities, officially added.
