Mumbai: The number of people who do not take a second shot of vaccine Covid-19 after completing the prescribed interval between two doses has crossed crore in Maharashtra.
Countries so far give a shot to 87% of the population is eligible, but the full vaccination coverage is about 55%.
Data provided by the Ministry of Public Health on Tuesday showed that 1.05 crore people – nearly 92 lakh which has taken Covishield and 10.6 lakh which has taken Covaxin – have failed on their second shot.
Mumbai is the only district that has passed the second dose coverage of 80% (83%).
However, the city also has more than seven lakh people who do not take the second shot.
Although there is evidence to subvert that could lead to breakthroughs Omicron variant infections, experts believe that vaccination will be the single most effective tool in curbing hospitalization and death.
Imnilologist Dr Vineeta Bal had earlier told TOI that the vaccine provides protection that is very clear to the cases of the most vulnerable and seriously.
State data shows that Pune (11.6 lakh) followed by Mumbai (6.5 lakh) have the highest number of people who do not take a second shot Covishield.
Nashik (5.5 lakh), Kolhapur (5.4 lakh) and Thane (5.3 lakh) was next with the highest defaulter.
In the case of Covaxin, Buldhana (1.2 lakh) has the largest number of people for a second shot.
Apathy is the main reason why people do not show the urgency to fully vaccinated, said Dr.
Sanjay Deshmukh, Deputy Regional Director, Pune.
“There are a lot of vaccine, but there are voters were very slow in the centers,” he said, adding that many private centers has completely stop vaccination.
Satara health officials say many citing side effects suffered after the first dose when they were called and encouraged to take the second.
“Because covid-19 lower case, there is a sense of co-mplacency general,” said a district health official.
Tiny district has nearly 4 lakh people who have missed the second dose.
“Some have not come in for their second shots even after completing 120 days,” he added.

Dr Jitendra Jadhav, L Ward medical officer of health, said there is no beneficiary them attentively.
“But the common reason that we hear is that they will soon pick it up, or they had a wedding to attend, they go on vacation, or date slipped their minds,” he said, adding that the ward has a large enough numbers that have missed their second shot.
Dr.
Mangala Gomare, BMC executive health officer, said they had started the night vaccination centers to serve those who may not have time during the day to get a jab.
“Each ward has now center that stays open until 10 pm and people should use it,” he said.
