Mumbai: The availability of safety belts on the school bus is less, with 47% of respondents nationally stating that their school vehicles are not equipped with a seat belt.
In Mumbai and Pune, 45% and 34% of respondents reported the same thing.
This is the finding of the ‘National Study of Safe travel to schools’, a research report by the Savelife Foundation and the Indian Mercedes-Benz Research and Development was released on Thursday.

Asked whether the school held a workshop for road safety education, 73% of respondents in Mumbai reported that there were no workshops as it was done, or did not realize whether such a workshop was carried out.
It also appeared that throughout India, a child who was worried witnessed an accident during their trip to school, while 6% of them themselves were involved in a road accident or a situation that almost left out during the trip to and from school.
When asked about the behavior of road driver users, nationally, around 23% of parents and 26% of children who use vehicles arranged personally claim that children complain about “spirit driving” by the driver.
About 32% of parents and 52% of children in Mumbai, and 23% of parents and 14% of children in Pune reported the same thing.
As for school buses, in Mumbai, more than one third (40%) respondents report that children / they sometimes or most complain drive with the driver of the school affiliated vehicle.
When it comes to using safety devices among independent / family-based transportation users, nationally, 34% of respondents recognize that they never ensure that all passengers use headgear / helmets.
Furthermore, 20% of respondents who use private cars acknowledge that all passengers (including children) do not use seat belts.
In Mumbai, 14% of respondents as a whole (12% of parents and 16% of children) claim that it is never confirmed that all passengers wear helmets.
Furthermore, 12% of respondents reported that they had never used a seat belt during their trip.
In Pune, 32% of respondents as a whole (37% of parents and 27% of children) claim that it is never ensured that all passengers wear helmets.
Furthermore, 26% of respondents reported that they never used a seat belt during their trip.
The study, which also focused on the safety of children in the school zone revealed that nationally, almost half of the respondents reported that there were no cycling tracks present in the school zone, and 30% of respondents reported the absence of a path in the school zone in the school zone.
In Mumbai, 25% of respondents claimed that there was no cycling line throughout the school zone, and 29% reported the absence of a path.
