Nagpur: A 46-year-old police officer, who recently lost his eyes to Mukormycosis, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service gun in the city of Nagpur Maharashtra, police said.
The Constable Pramod Mergurwar’s head shot himself in the mouth with his service weapon at his home in the city Mankapur area around 3pm, a official said.
Mergurwar, who has joined the Special Protection Unit (SPU) in deputation a few years ago, has recovered from Covid-19 and then contracted a black fungal infection, the official said.
The police chief was hospitalized for treatment, where the doctor had to issue one of his eyes, and immediately when the infection began to spread quickly, he lost the other eyes too, he said.
The police had deprecated after his recovery, the official said, added that the deceased’s body was sent for post-mortem and accidental death cases had been registered.
The deceased police survived by his wife and two children, he added.
