Pune: A 36-year-old daily wage worker and his two sons, aged 13 and 10 years, sank at the mine in Kusgaon Village near Kamset, about 65 km from here, on Sunday morning.
The man jumped to the pond to save his two sons realized that they were sinking for a while after they entered the water to swim, police said.
Pune rural police said the deceased, Piraji Sule, had brought his sons of Saevah and Sachin to enjoy the waterfall in a hilly field near Kusgaon.
“There is a mine at the foot of the hill, which is now filled with water due to rain,” an officer from the Kamshet police told TII.
He said the two sons of Sule had entered the mine.
When they started drowning, Sule jumped to save them.
However, he also began to sink.
“A local man, who has brought his livestock to graze, raised the alarm,” the officer said.
He said the local residents ran towards the mine and brought the trio out of the water.
“They were sent to the hospital and said to die,” the officer said.
The officer said that Sule survived by his wife and a five-year-old son.
