Maharashtra hopes to persuade Amazon, Uber to go electricity faster

New Delhi: Maharashtra will offer companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Uber Incentives to build their shipping fleet ahead of the 2025 target for clean air, the Minister of Environment told Reuters.
Maharashtra is an important market for e-commerce companies, ride-hiling and food.
Last year, it set a target for the company to tumble 25% of their fleet in 2025.
Now he wants to bring the target forward by offering higher incentives for bulk purchases of electric vehicles (EV), Minister of State, Aaditya Thackeray, told Reuters in an interview.
“We tried to be on the previous side of 2025 and saw whether the company could get more incentives and move quickly.
This not only benefits us in terms of clean air but also benefit them in terms of the economy and their income model,” he too.
said.
State companies tend to approach the following month including Amazon, Uber, Walmart’s Flipkart, SoftBank Group-Backed Firm Ridesharing Ola and food delivery company Zomato and Swiggy.
Push comes weeks after New Delhi, issued a strict rule design for the company to get a license on the condition that a certain percentage of their new fleet is electricity.
The Maharashtra government has not bid to the company and Amazon, Flipkart, Uber, Ola, Zomato and Swiggy not immediately answer questions from Reuters about the possibility of speeding up the electrification process.
Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato and Swiggy have previously set EV targets for 2025 and 2030, and Uber works with EV companies to introduce electrification in the fleet.
Green shift but the proposal to advance the target can worry about some industrial executives that are afraid of significant shifts on electric vehicles can come at a cost because of the lack of affordable long-term vehicles and inadequate charging infrastructure.
“When one country makes such a move to be a template for others to follow without fully understanding business implications,” said an executive with an armed company that refused to be identified.
Thackeray, who pioneered a wider climate change agenda, said he was aware of challenges and had plans to make Maharashtra leading EV manufacturers.
The country has become a large car hub and home for domestic car makers such as Tata Motors that will invest in building more EVs, as well as global players such as Mercedes Benz, who will gather if the electric sedan is luxurious there.
Maharashtra offers some of the highest incentives from any country to manufacturers and EV buyers in lower tax forms.
It also built a network of charging stations along the highway and in the state-owned parking lot in Mumbai.
Thackeray plans to shift public transportation to clean fuel and have mandated government departments to turn their vehicles into electricity.
He also spoke with investors on ways to increase investment in clean transportation and energy.
“All of these shifts towards the green economy …
this is a very large economic revolution.
There are many benefits in terms of revenue for the country, benefits for companies and employment for private individuals,” he said.
But Thackeray said to increase EV supply and demand, India needs to reduce import taxes on cars to enable companies such as Tesla Inc., which with which countries have held talks, to test the market.
“Global manufacturers need to see India as the main market.
After the request is made here they will naturally come and produce.
Until then, we need to provide import incentives,” he said.
