Mumbai: At least 100 wild dogs around Ratnagiri in Conkan are feared to have been poisoned.
The 27 dog carcass was found scattered across the city on Wednesday.
A criminal violation has been submitted to the Ratnagiri City Police Station.
More than 75 dogs from various parts of the city cannot be found, said Sanil Dongre, residents of Ratnagiri City.
Post-Mortem was conducted on 27 carcasses by Team Three Veterinarians – Dr.
Vivek Panvelkar, Dr.
Swaroop Kale and Dr Avinash Bhagwat.
While the poisons used to kill cannot be determined immediately, Dr.
Bhagwat said he suspected that the anti-termite powder was used to poison the dogs.
“This is an odorless substance that resembles sugar crystals.
In 10 minutes of its consumption, it can make animals stretch in pain and ultimately cause death,” said Dr.
Bhagwat toi.
He remembered that in 2008, at least 40 dogs had been destroyed in bulk in Ratnagiri, using anti-termite powder.
Many local animal lovers witnessed helplessly when the dogs died, Sabah Patankar said.
The population of wild dogs has increased in Ratnagiri, said Saniket Warekar, an animal welfare council officer for the Ratnagiri District.
“This KB program is not implemented at Ratnagiri at this time because the dog population has increased.
This has caused many cases of dog abuse,” Word Warekar, added that he had written to the city council and district collector around a week ago, asked them to continue the program KB.
Welekar expressed suspicion that several local politicians had planned mass dog poisoning in an effort to calm dog haters.
The police need to be sensitive to take fast action, said Animal Activist Jue Dinesh Kudarkar.
“If not, such crimes will only feel encouraged to do more crimes like that,” Kudtartar added.
Animal welfare workers confirm that all city bodies and local Panchayats must maintain funds to sterilize.
