Hyderabad: When Mahatma Gandhi spoke, the 17-year-old Venkaiiah Venkaah managed to be as close to him, being damaged by the man who led the struggle for freedom.
Gandhi was on his way to the train from Madras (now Chennai) to Wardha in Maharashtra and stopped at Khammam.
Aware of this before, Venkaiiah, who was already participating in the freedom, was among those who went in 100 Bullock trains to attend meetings.
“We will be satisfied with full freedom,” said Mahatma Gandhi handling the crowd.
“Gandhi spoke in Hindi and some of them heard it from the right in front and understood, giving the translation to the people standing behind.
The crowd was driven,” Vusaiiah Venkaah told Toi.
VENKAIAH VENKAIAH 92-year-old who lives in Nelakondapalli Mandal in Khammam Regency remembers when they got the news about Gandhi’s murder on January 30, 1948.
In nine days, he got a statue of Gandhi and was installed with the size of the village of Mujjugudem Village, where Venkaiiah was born.
Venkaiiah said that the installation of the statue might occur even though police were nizam because of the atmosphere of communal amity.
The situation had emerged when during the armed struggle, four people who conveyed information to Nizam police identified.
“They will meet a cruel end, not my family and others intervene.
We live in communal harmony complete with Muslims in the village, even referring them as our own relatives.
So when the statue of Gandhi was installed, there was no information that was forwarded to the police Nizam, “recalled Venkaiiah Vunnam.
Venkaiiah’s main activity is educating people in the freedom movement and makes them follow what is happening elsewhere in this country.
One of his relatives was killed in shooting by troops who tried to prevent the activity.
“I will not describe the struggle for freedom as something dangerous so I was involved.
Participating in the freedom movement is the main prize that can be asked for anyone,” said Venkaiiah.
