Maldives ink pact for the biggest infrastructure project, funded by India

New Delhi: India and Maldives signed a contract Thursday for the implementation of the Indian-funded connectivity project, which was explained by Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid as the largest infrastructure initiative in the island country.
Under the larger GMCP project connectivity project (GMCP) project, 6.74-km-length bridge and Causeway link will be built to connect the capital city with the islands side by side in Villingli, Gulhifalhi and Thaifushi.
Funded with a $ 100 million grant and a $ 400 million credit line from India, this will be the biggest infrastructure project in Maldives, officials said.
Contracts for the Implementation of Projects Signed between the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Infrastructure Maldives and AFCons Ltd.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of National Infrastructure & Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam, Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer, Minister of Transportation Aishh Nahula and High Commissioner of India Sunjay Sudhir.
The biggest connectivity project so far in Maldives is a sinamale bridge (1.4 km) built under Chinese assistance that connects men with Hulhule and Hulhumale.
In a series of tweets, Maladvia’s foreign minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar to support the development trip of Maldives.
“This is a decisive moment in the journey of the construction of Maldives,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Maladvia Abdulla Shahid on Twitter.
“India is proud to be the main development partner of Maldives.
It is very committed to its national progress,” Jaisankar Tweet in his response.
Improving regional connectivity has become a top priority for India and Maldives.
Direct cargo ferry services that connect Tuticorin in Kochi with men and Kulhuffushi began in September 2020.
