Chandigarh: A 21-year-old adult man can live like a partner outside Wedlock with a woman who approves 18 years and above, said the Punjab High Court and Haryana last week.
HC statement is in line with the Supreme Court’s order in May 2018 that adult partners can live together without getting married.
HC made observations while hearing a protection request by a partner in a direct relationship from Gurdaspur Punjab Regency.
Both of them are above 18 years old – the age of a woman reaches adult and can get married.
Men are also legal to become adults at the age of 18, but cannot get married before 21 in accordance with Hindu marriage laws.
The couple approached HC for protection, accusing threats from their families of their relationship.
Their advice said they were worried that their families could kill them.
“This is the task of the state boundary in accordance with the obligations of the constitution of their fundamental rights as considered in the constitution, becoming an Indian citizen,” said Judiciary Harnaresh Singh Gill.
