Udhagamandalam: A 26-year-old tribal man was trampled to death by a wild elephant near Kunjapanai in the Kotagiri forest range in the Nilgiris on Tuesday night, while he was returning home after offering prayers at a temple.
Forest department officials said R Rajkumar, a resident of Chemmanarai tribal hamlet near Kunjapanai, had gone to Thalamokkai temple around 7pm on Tuesday.
“While he was returning home, the elephant suddenly came out of the nearby thick vegetation and trampled him to death,” said Saravanakumar, assistant conservator of forests, Nilgiris division.
Forest officials retrieved the body and sent that to the Kotagiri government hospital, where postmortem was performed on Wednesday.
