Mangaluru: City police arrested 12 gang members to hunt forest boar, and seize weapons and other equipment used to hunt on Sunday.
The defendant was John C Menezes, Shrinivas, Guruprasad, Joel Anil D’Souza, Ajay, Sanath, Poojary Harishda, Mohan Gowda, Nonya, Vinay Poojary, Ramesh and Ganesh.
They were picked up from Guddeyangadi at Kodyadka from Puttige Village at the Moodbidri police limit.
The police have confiscated two dead wild pigs, 4 SBBL weapons, nets, knives, heirlooms, gas cylinders, gas burners, tables, two Omni cars, and 12 cellphones.
City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said the gang members misused their licensed weapons – intended for protection of plants and individuals from wild animals – to hunt in areas that are prohibited, mostly in Moodbidri and Karkala.
They also hunt down other animals, especially wild boar.

The defendant, Anand Gatty, 50, was arrested and produced before a court that lived in police custody.
Police have restored white sulfur powder (400kg), potassium nitrate (350kg), barium nitrate (50kg), potassium chlorite (395kg), aluminum powder of various classes (260kg), 0.22 air gun pellets (161 boxes each) , Lead ball (30kg) and charcoal (240kg).
City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said easy access to illegal substances can increase their threat to be misused.
“Mangaluru is a sensitive area with a close range of Naxal prone areas.
We have maintained a close watch, especially after people were killed in Batu-mine in Chikkaballapur and Shivamogga earlier this year,” he said.
It was said that RAID was carried out based on a tip-off received by DCP (law and order) Hariram Shankar.
A dog was reported to be shot dead with a car smile suspected at close range in Shivabhag last month.
After this, the police tried to find a pellet source used for crime.
Restored explosives are thought to be used in the cracker industry, mine, fishing and wells.
The source said they were kept without permission in a commercial-residential building where several families lived.
Sources of these substances are being investigated.
