Many Bengalureans think skywalks is a waste of money

Bengaluru: There is a skywalk, but Ramesh Purab prefers to cross a busy road near the KSR city train station.
Asked why he chose to brave the speeding vehicle, the student said: “Skywalk has an elevator that can only accommodate only five people.
When we are in a hurry, it’s easier to cross the road rather than taking the stairs or waiting for the elevator.” According to Purab, Skywalk Bengaluru is just a waste of money.
“If they don’t add the size of the elevator or replace the stairs with the escalator, people will not use it,” he told the Tim Team conducting an examination of reality in the state of the skywalk and their use.
The team continued to guard in a colorful skywalk near Da Ra Bendre Junction in Jayanagar for one hour where only two people preferred to use it.
“Skywalk is clean, but the elevator doesn’t work properly.
To cross the road where the traffic is well arranged, why do we need skywalk?” Asked Padmini Putture, a Jayanagar resident.
In accordance with BBMP data, there are 51 skywalks throughout the city, but more than 30 of them do not serve their purpose because they do not have an elevator, or have a dysfunctional elevator.
The structure built to allow the subtle part across the busy stretch is too complicated to use, or not maintained.
Skywalk crosses MH Marigowda Road in Lakkasandra, near Nimhans, has a CCTV camera, elevator and generator back, but no one looks operational.
“Skywalk finished in 2019, and because this is a busy road, I use it every day.
Skywalk is cleaned every day, but I have never seen the operational elevator.
Maybe in the days when senior officers came to check, they turned it on for a few minutes, But then turned off again, “said Jagadish Channabasappa, an employee of Nimhans.
However, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanaagara (BBMP) official said Skywalks was included in response to requests from traffic police.
“We usually do not recommend SkyWalks.
This is a police department asking us for it.
We call a tender and whoever gets it, allowed to land to build a structure,” said a senior BBMP official.
“We have suggested Skywalks, but it is a BBMP duty to defend it and they do not do it right,” said BR Ravikanthe Gowda, Joint Commissioner (traffic), added: “Every skywalk needs to be clean, friendly and safe, especially for women and women and Children and must have an elevator.
“When checking with several contractors in charge of maintaining Skywalk, they admitted that people barely used it.
“Sometimes many illegal activities occur in the elevator, which is the main reason to turn off the elevator,” said a contractor.
