The MotoGP champion six-time Honda Marc Marquez was worried he would not have a “normal arm” after an accident that threatened his career but the Spaniard said he was now fully focused on the battle back to his best form.
Marquez broke his arm on July 2020 opening Spain Spain in Jerez and did not compete again until the Portuguese GP this year in April.
The youngest champion in the history of the main class said the accident made him unable to hold a bottle of water later.
“I’m afraid I won’t have a normal arm,” he told the Guardian.
“There was one point in October-November when I couldn’t take a bottle of water, I tried to eat, I couldn’t move the arm in a normal way.” The 28-year-old managed an emotional victory at the German GP in June, won for the first time since the accident, but he was far behind in the driver’s championship, putting 11-122 points behind Fabio Quartararo leader.
Marquez said he lost a feeling of victory, equating “medicine”, but he was far from giving up when he tried to push through difficult moments.
“My motivation is higher than before because this is the first time I have a very difficult moment in my career,” he said.
“In good times, everyone is happy and smiling, on a hard time you need to fight.” The easiest way is to stop and return when I feel ready in one or two years.
But it’s not my style.
My style is trying to suffer to increase and return.
And to enjoy it on a bicycle.
Now I don’t enjoy it, now I suffer.
