Mumbai: MBBS students will soon have to undergo internship training at Ayush, along with their other posts.
The rules for compulsory rotating internships, 2021, released by the National Medical Commission (NMC), said that a week’s training must be included in the rotation schedule in one of the Indian medicine systems as an option.
In the welcome step, training a week each in two super disciplines, including cardiology, nephrology, pulmonary medicine, and medical oncology, has been included in the internship for students of MBBS.
Of the 17 posts which must be completed by MBBS students for 12 months after graduation, 14 is mandatory and three are choices.
Training of super scientific disciplines and the Indian Medical System is between its choices.
For Ayush, NMC said that Interns can choose elective from Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Homeopathy, and Siddha Saya Rigpa.
Sudha Shenoy, a parent representative, said the internship was usually carried out in its own student specialization.
“It will also reduce their time spent in their specialty expected to be trained,” he added.
A doctor from a civil hospital said: “They must be aware of Ayush, but we hope the training will only be awareness.
May not need to enter it explicitly in the regulation,” he said.
Including super special training in internship will provide better exposure, said an internship from a government hospital.
NMC also recommends that students complete their internship from the same institute, they graduate, without leaving the room for the transfer.
Many are looking for transfers from private colleges to the government for better exposure.
