Meghalaya leader receives notification of extortion from militant groups

Shillong: Several ministers and MLA in Meghalaya have received extortion notices from prohibited organizations, days after the death of former militant clothing in a meeting with the police with the police.
Deputy Minister Meghalaya Prestone Tynsong confirmed on Saturday that several leaders in the state had received extortion notices.
“We are aware of the fact that the Minister and Mla have received this (extortion notice) and this problem is being investigated,” Tynsong told PTI.
The investigation has been initiated by the state police because a number of politicians received text messages on their cellphones from militant organizations “demanded Rs 10 lakh and above as income tax”, said a senior officer.
Violence has erupted in the Mawlai and JAIW Shillong regions after the death of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, the former Secretary General who arranged his own National Liberation Council Hynniewtrep (HNLC) which was banned (HNLC), in a meeting when the police raided his home in early August.

Thangkhiew, who had surrendered in 2018, was shot dead when he was suspected of trying to attack the police team with a knife during the attack in connection with a series of IED explosions in the state.
The police investigated this case, given the safety and security of people who have text messages via SMS or WhatsApp, he said.
Not only political leaders but some entrepreneurs have also received messages on their mobile from abroad, police officers said.
“The request was made on behalf of income tax with a tone of Rs 10 lakh and above.
Some politicians and entrepreneurs have been asked to pay the amount of income tax to HNLC,” he said.
According to the police, at least two people, including a woman, was injured in an explosive explosive explosion of improvised devices by the rebels, who went to the busy market here on August 10 on an email to the news organization, the HNLC which was prohibited had claimed responsibility for the explosion before the celebration Independence Day.
Last month, the organization had carried out another IED attack near the quarter personnel of the reserve police forces on the East Jaintia Hill.
Earlier this year, HNLC has also carried out attacks in the cement plant in the district.
The government of Meghalaya has instituted a judicial investigation which will be carried out by the Vaiphei T Judgment (Retd), Chair of the MeMhalaya Human Rights Commission, into the meeting incident.
