Thiruvananthapuram: Police pionode on Saturday arrested a 49-year-old man on charges of attacking an old woman who lived alone and seized his gold ornaments.
The police identified the defendant as Udayakumar aka Arjunan from Puliyor under the boundary of the Palode police station.
Police said the crime allegations took place early on August 27.
The defendant allegedly entered his neighbor’s house through the kitchen door and smothered the 72-year-old woman, who was sleeping in the bedroom, until she fainted.
He then robbed the gold ornaments he was wearing.
The prohibition includes a pair of earrings, gold chains with pendants and rings.
The police suspected that the culprit could be someone who knew that the woman lived alone.
Thus, the investigation team began interrogating neighbors.
They found that Udayakumar gave a contradictory statement during interrogation.
After this, they launched scientific investigations to find out their activities immediately before and after crime.
Checking the call data, the police found that he had contacted a financial company in Nedumangad.
When interrogated again using the evidence collected against him, the defendant acknowledged the crime.
