Boston: Michelle Wu was sworn on Tuesday as Mayor of Boston, became a woman and the first person to choose to office in a long history of the city.
The first Asian-American mayor’s oath in the city came two weeks after Wu won the election of the city mayor.
Before Wu, Boston only chose white men as mayors.
Wu, 36, took over for fellow Democrats – Former Acting Mayor Kim Janey – who was the first woman of Boston and the first black population serving, but who was not chosen to the top post.
Swear oath means WU will now face a frightening task to make goodness in many ambitious policy proposals which are the backbone of their campaign.
To retreat against the cost of housing that has soared that has forced some former residents from the city, Wu has promised to pursue a rental stabilization or rental control.
The biggest obstacle for the proposal was the fact that Massachusetts voters narrowly agreed to the 1994 voice mail questions that prohibit lease control throughout the state.
Other Wu’s top campaign promises are to create a public transit system “free tariff”.
Wu said the proposal would strengthen the city economy, overcoming climate change and help those who ride the bus or subway to school or work.
Like the promise of lease control, Wu cannot unilaterally carried out with rates on the general transit system.
Wu said he would try to work with partners in the state government to make each proposal come true.
Wu, whose parents immigrated to the US from Taiwan, grew up in Chicago and moved to Boston to attend Harvard University and Harvard Law School.
Wu, who has two small children, is the third mayor of Boston this year.
“I know that Boston is in a good hand and I am very proud to call you the Mayor of Madam,” Janey said before Wu was sworn.
Janey has become President of the Boston City Council before taking over as mayor.
He rises to the top position with acting when the mayor elected in this city, Democrats Marty Walsh, resigned this year to become US employment secretary under President Joe Biden.
Janey was sworn on March 24.
Janey tried to use the status of the office in his escape to replace Walsh, but he failed to collect enough votes to make him pass the election of the initial mayor who cut the field to two candidates – Wu City Council members and Annissa Essaibi George.
