JAIPUR: The undergraduates belonging to the middle class are more susceptible to marijuana, cannabis, cocaine, brown sugar, codex phosphate drugs and intoxicated tablets in the city, say Jaipur police which have categorised the drug users on the basis of its operation Clean Sweep running since October 2019.
Till June 26, they have conducted 727 operations and arrested 925 persons who claimed to have broken the back of drug peddlers.
The socioeconomic analysis of drug addicts and peddlers has helped them making three categories of drug addicts in the city.
The report reads, “Middle class students pursuing BE, B.
Com, B.
Pharmacy, B.
Tech and coaching students have found to be taking drugs.
Most of these students are poor in studies and they are consuming these drugs under the influence of students with similar aptitude.
Some students have turned to become peddlers and suppliers to fulfil their drug needs,” reads the report.
The police have also identified the areas with the high residency of students like Mansarovar, Pratap Nagar, Muhana, Bajaj Nagar and Shiprapath.
They have made several raids in these areas claiming to have exposed the drugs rackets.
The report further says that unemployed poor youths of the Muslim community living in the slums are addicted to smack.
“Due to their poor economic condition, they often resort to petty crimes.
In case, they didn’t find smack and brown sugar, they consume adhesive and whitener,” reads the report, which also pointed out that they have been disowned by their families.
The vulnerable area includes—Idgah, Bhatta Basti and Jalupura.
The final category comes from the upper class.
The report pointed out that young boys and girls belong to the upper-class societies consumes cannabis and modern drugs at elite bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants.
“They have been found to consume drugs in order to bring adventure in their lives and to kill boredom.
The number of such cases involving youths of the rich class has been increasing in the city is again an area of concern,” said Digant Anand, DCP Crime, Jaipur Police Commissionerate.
The operation Clean Sweep is intended to make Jaipur drugs free has been gone beyond by reaching out to the root cause of addiction.
“On the basis of the analysis, we have adopted a multi-layered approach by reaching out to the vulnerable communities, initiating campaigns creating awareness and starting a 10-day rehabilitation centre soon with the help of NGOs to bring the addicts into the mainstream,” said Anand.
