Washington: The State Department said on Wednesday, it looked at the loss of a bottle of whiskey nearly $ 6,000 given more than two years ago to the State Secretary of Mike Pompeo by the Japanese government.
Pompeo did not know anything about gifts or investigations, said a representative.
In the notification submitted in the federal list, the department said it was unable to find a trace of the existence of the bottle and there was a “sustainable question” into what happened to liquor.
The department reported investigation in the annual accounting of prizes given to senior US officials by foreign governments and leaders.
The office protocol office is needed to record gifts provided to US officials and track their dispositions.
The recipient has the option to change gifts with certain values to national archives or other government entities or buy them for personal use by replacing the Treasury Department for their value.
Japanese whiskey valued at $ 5,800 and served to Pompeo in June 2019, maybe when he visited the country that month for the 20 summit group which was also attended by President Donald Trump.
But it’s not like other gifts, the department says there are no records about what happens to bottles.
“This department is looking for problems and has sustainable questions,” he said in the notification of federal registers.
Notifications do not offer additional details.
Representatives for Pompeo said POMPEO “has no knowledge of gifts and has not been contacted by anyone about the investigation of it.” Pompeo also reported receiving two carpets worth $ 19,400 from President Kazakhstan and Foreign Minister United Arab Emirates.
Both floor coverings are transferred to public service administration, the notification said.
Filing said Trump and his wife, Melania, received a prize worth more than $ 120,000 from foreign leaders in 2019, compared with $ 88.200 in the previous year.
In the first year of Trump in the office, in 2017, they reported receiving a prize of more than $ 140,000.
There are no significant general themes for 2019 prizes.
