PATIALA: The signature campaign against illegal mining from Swan and Satluj Riverbeds has begun in 13 Village Division Anandpur Sahib District Ropar after a meeting in Bhini Village Gurudwara two days ago.
Signatory villages include Thana, Bhaini, Vati Bastiyan, Mawa, Mukari, Gobindpur Bela, Amarpur Bela, Mothapur, Roli, Jhingdi, Khedi, and Saskaur.
Their residents have formed the Illegal Mining Sangharsh committee (IMSC) which will take memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Ropar and police senior supervisors on Wednesday.
Imsc Secretary General Mohan Singh said: “For 15 years, the government remained blind to illegal mining in our area, on a bridge on Jalan Garshankar to Anandpur Sahib, where Swan and Satluj met.
Before 1988, the flood in Satluj would decide our village but Then the river changed direction and we could reach Anandpur Sahib through bridges and roads, but 15 years of mining lower the ground and prepare underground water reserves, and now we are afraid of Satluj may begin to flow again if illegal mining continues.
