Five: Interior Minister Peru resigned on Tuesday after a report that he had a Halloween party at his home violating the rules of Covid-19.
The South American country has been hit hard by a pandemic, with more than 200,000 people killed from the virus – the highest mortality rate in the world per capita – in accordance with the official data calculation of AFP.
Minister Luis Barranzuela faced a storm of criticism after less than a month following the TV report that he had held a Halloween party at his home in the five capital on Sunday – the type of collection which was banned by government decrees only a few days earlier.
The news pushed anger from all sides of the political spectrum in the country 33 million, forcing Barranzuela to claim the meeting was for work purposes and that he was a victim of “false charges”.
“I have received and accepted the resignation of the Minister of Home Affairs Luis Barranzuela.
In the next few hours I will take an oath of anyone who will replace him,” President Leftist Pedro Castillo tweeted.
Peruvian Congress – currently controlled by right-wing opposition – must decide this Thursday whether it will vote confidence to the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Castillo, Mirtha Vasquez.
The local press has reported the government the possibility of losing the vote has a former 58-year-old Barranzuela police stay in the office.
