Lucknow: In a development which is very important politically, Cabinet Minister Swami Prasad Maurya resigned, sending ripples across the country’s political circles polls on Tuesday.
While Maurya not reveal if he had resigned from the BJP also, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted an undated photo with Maurya said: “We welcome the leaders of social justice and equality”.
Sources close to the Maurya, an MLA from Padrauna in Kushinagar, said he expected to formally join the SP this weekend.
Development, significantly, came on a day when the BJP brass met in New Delhi to finalize the names of party candidates for state polls to come.
Tracking SP Maurya in the camp, however, has the potential to lend a stunning shot in the arm Akhilesh which has positioned itself as the most powerful rival of the BJP in the state elections.
In his resignation sent to the governor Anandiben Patel, Maurya expressly cites “gross ignorance” the state government towards Dalits, backward classes, farmers, youth and small investors as the reason behind his decision.
