Chennai: The player based in Kolkata Mitrabha Guha has become the 72nd Grand Chess Master in India by pocketing the third and final GM norms during the tournament in Serbia.
The 20-year-old Guha reached a GM degree after securing the last norm on the third GM ongoing Saturday Mix 220 Turney at Novi Sad, Serbia.
Indians, who beat GM Nikola Sedlak from Serbia in the ninth round on Monday, have so far scored seven points with six wins, two draws and disadvantages of Russia Vladimir Zakhartsov in the seventh round.
Kolkata players have scored Norma GM both in the Sheikh Russel GM tournament in Bangladesh two weeks ago and also crossed 2500 Elo Barrier in the second round of the tournament.
To become GM, a player must secure the three GM norms and cross the direct rank 2,500 Elo points.
The Indian chess federation congratulated Guha to become GM.
“The international master based in Kolkata Mitrabha Guha became the 72nd Grandmaster after completing the requirements by securing the third and final GM norms in the third GM Saturday Mix 220 – Novi Sad, Serbia,” AICF said on his website.
Former world champion and Chess Legend Viswanathan Anand also congratulated Guha.

To reach the GM title just two days after Sankalp Gupta did it during the event at Arandjelovac, Serbia to become the 71th GM of the country.
