MADURAI: Fifteen UNC funerals have been excavated from two adjacent clusters in Sivagalai in Tuticorin District Tamil Nadu.
The Department of Archaeological Nadu Tamil is doing the second phase of excavation in Sivagalai.
Prakharakarakan’s excavation director told the Toi that Sivagalai was allegedly as a Sivagalai cluster site, just like a Konthai cluster.
ASI has gave a nod to dig six places in the cluster.
The second phase of excavation is being carried out in Sivagalai at a cost of Rs 34 Lakh.
So far 40 urn funerals have been found.
Several large jars about two to four feet.
The two quadrants that they began to dig recently have changed attractively, because 15 urn funerals have been found close to each other in a small area.
Five intact jars with lid and are expected to accommodate interesting details.
Ten of them are in good condition but without lid.
The rest is broken.
Urs will soon be opened in the presence of the University of Madurai Kamaraj.
The sample will be taken for DNA testing.
The department has also started excavation in three places in the cluster – Avarankadu Thiradu, Parakiramapandi Thiradu and Sekkadi.
They have not taken excavations in Pottkottai Thiradu, the Thiradu and Vella Thiradu, he said.
While digging neighboring villages, several potsherds, smoking pipes, bone points, spindle holes among other interesting artifacts found.
