Thiruvananthapuram: As part of curbing the price of vegetables that jumped, the government had decided to leave with 28 travelers who would mainly sell tomatoes throughout the state, the Minister of Agriculture P Prasad said on Thursday.
The official launch of a tomato shop traveled at Vikas Bhavan here.
The Ministry of Agriculture has decided to find the idea after soaring vegetable prices, especially tomatoes.
He said that the traveling vegetable shop would sell tomatoes with Rs 50 per kg.
In addition, other vegetables will also be available at subsidized prices, the Minister said.
The vehicle will travel from 7am to 7:30 a.m.
The Ministry of Agriculture has decided to buy tomatoes and other vegetables from within the country and also from other states, he said.
In places where there is no permanent market, more sales outlets and travel outlets will be arranged, he said.
The government has decided to make strong interventions on the open market to ensure that prices do not skyrocket, and RS 8 Crore has been intended for this, said Prasad.
A committee has also been formed under the Director of Agriculture which will be supervised by the Secretary (agriculture), anticipating future intervention.
The government is also considering sanction support money with agricultural director in terms of intervention needed in the future.
This number will be used to buy vegetables from other states and distribute them at subsidized prices every time an emergency appears.
The permanent committee for such procurement is also under the consideration of the government, he said.
Horticorp retail outlets have already sold vegetables with the procurement of 40 tons from other states every day.
In addition, 170 tons of vegetables are obtained from within the countries that are being sold through the vegetable council and fruits of Kerala (VFPCK), he said.
The department will launch a campaign to attract more people to vegetable farming, titled “Njanum Krishiyilekku” from January 1.
As part of a campaign, vegetable seeds and puppies will be distributed to the public.
As many as 10,000 hectares of land have been identified for agriculture, he added.
Horticorp will launch a new Christmas sales market from December 22 to January 1.
A total of 1,937 sales centers are operated under the department in the state, he said.
