NEW DELHI: The controversy surrounding the controversial citizenship legislation abiding in 2019 has definitely been among the largest hurdles confronted by the Narendra Modi administration during its next term.
Seconds later assuming office on May 30, the Modi administration introduced the Declaration (Amendment) Bill in Parliament amid a gigantic backlash in the opposition parties.
Despite stiff resistance, the authorities was able to find the charge cleared in the Houses of Parliament.
It turned into a law December 2019 following President Ram Nath Kovind’s assent.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act permits citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and that came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
The legislation, however, excludes Muslims.
What makes the law much more contentious is when it’s observed in combination with the planned National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The authorities had said it’ll expand the NRC action, a workout specific to Assam, into the remainder of the nation.
In addition, Union home minister Amit Shah’s announcement that we have to”know the chronology” of both CAA and NRC ignited fears.
Many worried that this could lead to people from the minority neighborhood decreasing their citizenship status if they’re not able to demonstrate their residential position and sent into detention centres.
The authorities attempted to quell the fears and denied any connection between the CAA and NRC.
However, it was too late.
The problem sparked off enormous anti-CAA protests throughout the nation, with some taking a violent twist.
However, it had been that the months-long Shaheen Bagh protest at the federal capital which hogged the national spotlight.
What began as a sit-in demonstration with a group of approximately 100 inhabitants turned to one of the biggest campsites to get anti-CAA protests.

It had been cleared just the afternoon before nationally lockdown was enforced in March 2020 to include Covid-19 disperse.
The opposition parties staged presentations requiring a roster of the laws, stating that CAA discriminates on spiritual lines.
They declared the CAA, together with NRC, plans to target India’s Muslim community also threatens the social fabric of the country.
The authorities put a staunch defence of this regulation enforcement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah carrying the lead.
PM Modi stated that his administration introduced the CAA to fix”historic” injustices and remembered that the Nehru-Liaquat pact to claim the law meets India’s”old guarantee” to religious minorities in neighboring nations.
The principles into the CAA — instructions about the way the legislation is going to be executed — are not yet been informed from the Centre.
The pandemic has compelled the authorities set the execution of CAA on grip.
