More cargo handled at Chennai Airport than last year

Chennai: Chennai Airport handles around 78,700 tons of cargo, including domestic cargo, in the first three months of this financial year.
This is a 41.6% increase compared to 32,742 tons handled for the period in accordance last year.
Imports have surpassed export cargo and has contributed to this increase.
Data from the Indian Authority Airport (AAI) shows that the airport handled 29,548 tons in April, 24, 473 tons in May and 24, 718 tons in June.
Not only a surge from the previous year when the Pandemic was at its peak, the handling of cargo has started closer to pre-covid-19 times this year.
The airport used to handle around 30,000 tons of cargo on average every month before the pandemic, an official said.
Now it has reached around 80% of the monthly volume of pre-covid time.
When handling cargo increases, the volume of imports remains high and is formed nearly 50% of the load dealt with a month.
Although international flights scheduled have not been continued, the airport gets cargo flights from abroad, without obstacles.
The new route has also been opened among destinations in Europe and Chennai.
In the days when countries in the Middle East have banned passengers from India, passenger flights are used to depart with cargo instead, an official said.
Although cargo handling has increased compared to last year, the resurrection was not fast enough compared to Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi, who was in front of Chennai in handling total cargo.
In June, Chennai handled 26,504 tons while Bengaluru handled 30, 418.
Mumbai handles 60, 971 tons and Delhi handling 72,481 tons.
After the early Lull in the first month of locking last year in April, the volume of cargo began to rise because the airline began moving goods including medical equipment, medicines and other items for hospitals in May and June and in the following months.
“It helps revive the handling of cargo when passenger traffic just drips.
Domestic airlines carry cargo tied to seats last year.
The trend of increasing continues.
When the business is opened, the cargo volume will rise further,” said an official.
