Nagpur: Increasing screen time, online schools, tasks, and settling lifestyles have begun to show the adverse effects on children.
More than a year online school has caused more eye problems in children, with a number of children aged 5 to 8 years need glasses.
Doctors say that when schools reopened, many more children will begin to realize that they have a vision problem.
AhtiaTric Doctor DR Jyoti Acharya said he saw more children who needed a second wave.
“Children need glasses at the younger age.
Digital Eye Strain (DES) is one of the main reasons.
The worrying fact is that most children cannot identify and tell anyone that they have visual problems,” he said , While adding that it is the responsibility of parents to identify vision problems in children and bring them to doctors if necessary.
A study to determine the prevalence, symptoms, frequency and risk factors related among children who attend online classes during the Covid-19 pandemic which was published earlier this year in the journal of the Indian Ophthalmology had alarming results.
More than 50% of children attending online classes suffer by des.
“There is an increase in the prevalence of des among children in the Covid era.
Parents must consider the duration, type and distance of the use of digital devices to avoid the symptoms of des in children,” this study ended.
Dr.
Puja Bang, Professor of Additional Oftalmology at AIIMS Nagpur, said a large number of students reached AIIMS complained of eye problems after the second wave.
“Children who already have glasses get a higher number, but also those who have never had glasses get numbers,” he said.
According to him, it is difficult for children to get glasses at an early age to get rid of them later.
“As a parent, I also understand that online schools are unavoidable.
So, we recommend limiting the screen time as much as possible, make sure the right break into your eyes, and watch the screen in the best position and point of view,” he said.
“Research has shown that children’s screen time almost doubled during the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Dr.
Gopal Arora, famous ophthalmologist.
“General humans flash eyelids 12 to 14 times in one minute.
But, when using a screen, this tariff is reduced to 5 to 7 times.
While focusing on several pixels on a small screen like a cellphone, the eyes are armed.
Finally, it leads to children Children who need glasses at an early age, “he added.
Mr.
Mrinal Phadke’s ophthalmologist said the reopening of the school was a must for younger children or they would suffer the pandemic of eye problems.
“Children aged 4 to 8 years must not see the screen for more than 2 hours.
Unfortunately, no one can follow this in online school format.
One more year online activity, and most children will have glasses when school reopened, “he said.
