New Delhi: As many as 3,66,138 road accidents occurred in India during the calendar in 2020, causing 1.31,714 deaths, parliament was told on Thursday.
Replying to the question at Lok Sabha, Minister of Road Transportation and Jalan Raya Nitin Gadkari, said the ministry has formulated a multi-branch strategy to address road safety problems based on emergency education, engineering and vehicles), enforcement and emergency care.
The Ministry of Transportation and Highway (Morus) has told ‘Members of the Parliamentary Street Committee’ in each state district to promote awareness among road users under the leadership of parliamentarians (Lok Sabha) from the district.
Replying to separate questions, Gadkari said that in the first three months of the current financial year, 2,284 KM national highway has been built in this country.
According to the Minister, 12,000 km has been targeted for the construction of the National Highway (NHS) in 2021-22 for the country.
Replying to another question, Gadkari said the ministry had received a list of 100 tourist destinations, then revised to 50 destinations, from the Ministry of Tourism for establishing facilities on the roadside, signed names and beauty at a distance of 15 to 20 years KMS on both sides of the tourist destination.
The Minister also noted that Morth has approved a scheme in January 2020 for development, adjustment, deployment and management of vehicle tracking platforms of countries for safety & enforcement according to AIS 140 specifications in the state / UTS below the estimated cost of the NIRBHAYA with a total cost of Rs 463.90 Crore.
Proposals in this case have been received from 29 states / UTS and implementation are in process, he said.
