The Director of the School Education Office James Lalrinchhana told PTI that at least 376 schools in seven districts, including Aizawl Regency, had been allowed to reopen for the new academic session 2021-2022.
The majority of schools that are permitted have started a regular class, while 27 schools in Khawzawl Regency will be reopened from Monday, he said.
He said that the school education department is currently identifying schools in the free area of Covid-19 and more schools will be reopened in the next few days.
At least 49 schools have so far been allowed to reopen in the Aizawl District, 151 in Champhai, 74 in Serchip, 47 in Lawngltai, 11 at SIHA, 20 in Simeal and 27 in the Khawzawl district, he said.
Of the 11 districts, four districts – Lunglei, Kolastic, Mamit and Hnahthial have not submitted a list of Covid-19 free villages where the reopening of the school can be permitted, according to Lalrinchhana.
He said the school, which has been allowed to reopen, is mostly located in remote rural villages where internet connectivity is very bad.
The reopening of schools in such villages has greatly helped students, who cannot get good internet access, he said.
Online classes are still ongoing for schools in the Covid-19 area, he said.
So far, no students infected with Covid-19 in such villages where schools reopened, he said.
Unlike previous years, new academic sessions (for 2021-2022) were postponed for a month because Covid-19 and the academic calendar began from May.
Schools and other educational institutions have been closed for about 15 months starting from March last year due to the spread of Covid-19.
After swimming in the case of Covid-19 from around November last year, the school was reopened for certain classes on January 22 this year but has been closed again since April with the emergence of the second wave of Covid-19.
