Rajkot: Rajkot residents will soon be able to have tree details on each city ward at their fingertips.
The Civic body has decided to Geo-tag more than 80,000 trees in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) area.
According to RMC, tree data in the city area will be very helpful in claiming carbon credits in the future.
To claim carbon credit, the Civic body is needed to provide authentic data on how much greenhouse gas emissions that have been reduced through green initiatives including tree plantations.
The city has a number of old trees and every year Civic’s body, NGOs, universities and the forest department planted trees under various government schemes.
For example, RMC has planted 60,000 trees in Ramvan, in addition to 20,000 other trees in various parts of the city.
It also planted 8,000 trees on looking for the past year.
Civil bodies have encouraged NGOs and private citizens to plant trees under the ‘Go Green’ scheme.
However, at present, there is no actual number of records of the number of trees in the city.rmc has developed a cellular application for geo-tagging.
Under the plan, the civic body garden branch staff will be assigned to the task of geo-tagging every tree in the city.
Staff must take pictures of trees and find them on a city map along with detail like species, estimates of age, height and the nature of the city’s green cover.
How many trees where the ward is, where the green cover is increasing and where it decreases.
This will give us an idea where we need to plant more trees.
“Geo-marker data will be shared with the Ministry of Forestry that monitors green closures throughout the city.
In the next financial year, RMC plans to develop 10 new gardens, children play areas and residents’ parks in the 1.50 lakh meter area.
Civic’s body too Planning urban forests and for that solid tree plantation has been planned with the Miyawaki method near Pradhyuman Park.
