New Delhi: As many as 40,845 cases of mucorikosis have been reported in the second wave of pandemic.
Data shows that death from infection is at 3,129.
More than 85% of those diagnosed with fungal infections have Covid-19.
In terms of age groups, 32% of those infected are young in brackets aged 18-45 years.
Overcoming a ministerial group meeting at Covid-19, Health Minister Union Harsh Vardhan gave members on the trajectory of mukormycosis infections that occurred to coincide with the surge in Covid-19 cases recently.
Of the 40,845 cases reported, 31,344 cases were rhinoceros in nature, he said.
“Of the total number, 34,940 patients had Covid (85.5%), 26,187 (around 64.11%) was co-morbid for temporary diabetes 21.523 (52.69%) of those infected in steroids,” he added.
In terms of age groups, the health minister shared that 13,083 patients were in the age group 18-45 (32%), 17,464 were in the age group 45-60 (42%) and 10,082 (24%) patients aged 60 and above.
Among other concerns related to Covid-19, the Minister of Health also talked about Delta Plus variants.
He told GOM that the Delta Plus variant has been categorized as a “variant of concern” and its attributes are being investigated in detail.
Intensive surveillance is being carried out wherever its presence is detected, said Minister, adding that districts in 12 states where the variant has been detected being monitored.
“Scientists now study the impact (Delta Plus) on transmission of diseases, severity, escape and other securities.
Also cultured in the laboratory and its influence on the vaccine is being studied,” said Minister.
Representative additional number of samples targeting the Covid cluster case with re-infection, a vaccine breakthrough case, super spreader and high mortality cluster events are also sent for genome sequencing.
Vardhan also said that through this pandemic, the government has continued to increase efforts to carry out genome sequencing and track various virus variants to formulate appropriate detention strategies.
So far the laboratory has carried out genomic sequencing in 45,500 samples.
In addition, the Ministry of Health team also tracks the trend of participants in more than 174 districts where the variant of this concern is detected.
GOM strongly emphasizes the importance of the appropriate Covid behavior.
