More water released from Red Hills, Poondi

Chennai: PWD officials enhance the release of surplus water from Red Hills and PoDi reservoirs in Chennai on Thursday as catchment areas receive heavy rain.
A senior PWD engineer said since 6:00 a.m., 2,000,000 cubic feet of water per second (Cusecs) was released from Red Hills Reservoir and 5,000 Cusecs from the Poondi reservoir.
Like the day, rainfall increased in both reservoirs, which brought more water.
Increased inflows for the reservoir forced the authorities to increase the release of surplus water.
Then, 3,000 cusecs of water were released from the Red Hills reservoir and 8,000 cusecs from PoDi Reservoir.
Among the five reservoirs, Cholavaram received maximum rainfall, which was recorded at 63 mm, followed by Kannankottai Thervoykandigai, who received 47 mm of rain.
Red Hills received 37 mm of rainfall while Chembarambakkkam and PoDi Reservoir was recorded 27.30mm and 27 mm, respectively.
Water combined storage in five reservoirs stands at 10,602 MCFT like against their full capacity of 11, 757 MCFT.
Adding or reducing the release of water from the reservoir will depend on the flow of water and rainfall.
Based on these two factors, further decisions will be taken by the PWD authority, he added.
