Guwahati: Even when the Covid-19 case daily in Assam increased at alarming speed, the death rate in the third wave was as low as 0.17% since 1.
January in the second wave (considered from April 1, 2021 to December.
31, 2021), numbers The death of the state was 1.26%, while the appropriate number in the first wave (from March 31, 2020 to 31 March 2021), was 0.51%.
Health experts connect a low mortality rate on the third wave to fewer disease severity, and say omicron has saved vital organs – lungs.
However, some other experts feel that vaccinations have helped drop mortality, although it is not the spread of the virus.
“Omicron is very contagious, but does not involve the important lungs.
It does not cause pneumonia, but the upper respiratory infection.
So, fewer deaths are reported this time,” said Dr.
Gayatri Gogoi, Assistant Professor Assam Medical College (AMC), Dibrugarh.Gogoi, which has been involved in several research works related to Covid-19, said the Delta variant was a lot more severe and caused pneumonia.
“We don’t know about the efficacy of vaccines.
However, it shows that those who are vaccinated experience fewer symptoms.
Still, there are deaths among people with co-morbidities, even after vaccinated,” he said.
Gogoi said he found his findings that there was a 1% death between vaccinated during the second wave.
Professor and Head of Lung Medical at Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Dr.
Jogesh Sarma also said the lower virulence of new tension is believed to be the reason behind less death during the third wave.
He, however, said that the more virulent Delta variant can come with Omicron and thus, the severity of the disease cannot be taken lightly.
Sarma said exposure to the extensive population to Covid in the first two waves also helped in getting immunity in many cases.
While more than 2.18 lakh people in Assam were infected in the first wave, the same increased to 4.02 lakh in the second wave.
“Most people have been vaccinated in the state.
This is clearly the reason behind a lower death,” he said.
“This virus will go through mutations and when the process runs on the power of a virus decrease,” said Sarma.in GMCH, 303 Covid patients were treated on Thursday, but the hospital authorities said most patients with co-morbid conditions remained the biggest concern, despite being vaccinated .
“Except for one or two cases, most of the covid victims this time are caused by co-morbid conditions.
Omikron is less ferocious and vaccination also helps reduce mortality,” said GMCH supervisor Dr.
Abhijit Sarma.
