Kochi: The Indian Navy Ace athlete, MP Jabir has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics on the 400m obstacle after he recorded 49.78 to win gold at the athletic championship between countries recently concluded in Patiala, a defense spokesman said on the day Thursday.
Jabir meets the requirements through the world ranking quota where there are 14 places available, said the spokesman.
The 25-year-old naval sailor comes from Malappuram, Kerala.
He is currently ranked 34 in the world athletic road to the Olympics where 40 athletes qualified.
When he competed at the Tokyo Olympics, Jabir would become the first Indian men’s athlete who participated in the 400m obstacle at the Olympics, he said.
PT Usha, legendary athletes from Kerala, competed at an obstacle of 400 meters at the Los Angeles Olympics.
It made Jabir second from the state to compete in the same event at the Olympics.
Jabir, Pocom (TEL), has participated in many national and international athletic championships representing the Indian Navy and services that produce many wins.
The spokesman said the athlete was in the final stage of preparation for the Tokyo Olympics.
The meeting between countries is the last Olympic qualification event for the Tokyo match.
In the absence of a large tournament because of the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the last competitive race of Jabir is in 2019.
