Coimbatore: POLLACHI Lok Sabha MP K Shanmuga Sundaram has urged the Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav for a while transfer the train service from Palakkad to Coimbatore through the Polychi-Podanur to avoid elephant death on the track in Madukkarai.
In a letter shot to the minister on Tuesday, Shanmuga Sundaram recalled the death of three elephants after being hit by a train that was quickly near Navakkarai recently.
In the past six years, 11 elephants were killed on the Kanjikode-Madukkarai train line, said MP.
Because the track is built deep in the forest, poor visibility, especially during the rainy season, leads to such an accident, it shows.
“The life of the elephant is under a constant threat along the Kanjikode and Madukkarai train lines.
The steps suggested by the train authority before NGT, including permanent speed restrictions, installing names and cables with low voltage on the limits, elephant ramps, honey bee alarms , and underpass will only disrupt this mammalian ecosystem, “he said.
He also stated that plans for fences and B lines between Madukkarai and Walaya stations would permanently make elephant access to their water sources.
“Most train lines B-line lines and A-line lines are in the forestry zone and nilgiris biosphere restoration.
This is the main reason why wild elephants are killed by the train.
Using an alternative route will help save the elephant,” he added.
