Chennai: Following the controversy over the former MPHIL title by Madras University, the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced that all state universities will offer an MPHIL degree program for 2021-22.
“Madras University recently stopped the MPHIL program.
Even though there are two opinions about the course, we have decided to continue the MPhil course at all universities,” said Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi told reporters after the meeting of the State Chancellor of the State University on Thursday.

Officials said the pre-research title lost sheen after the University Grant Commission (UGC) made a minimum qualification of PhD, net and Slets for faculty members in universities and universities.
However, the academic section said the elimination of M Phil’s degree was part of the 2020 national education policy and the university implemented NEP even though the state government had not received it.
Before Madras University, University of Madurai Kamaraj also stopped the course following the direction of the UGC.
Furthermore, the minister said all state universities will begin receipt of UG on August 1 based on the signs of class XII, as announced before.
“We have directed state universities to announce the results of the exam before making acceptance,” he said.
He further said that online engineering counseling will be carried out by the Directorate of Technical Education (Dote) this year too.
“All state universities must follow uniform procedures for the appointment of professors, inspection and registrant controllers.
They are asked to ensure transparency in the recruitment process,” the minister added.
