Coimbatore: Bharathiar University (BU) Deputy Chancellor has raised concerns about the undue delay in the provision of PhD to scholars in the university.
Many delays are associated with research supervisors and universities working on ways and means to eliminate delays.
Deputy Chancellor P Kaliraj said that they had identified 75 PhD candidates who Viva Voce had dragged for months together without legal reasons.
Usually, it takes three years for full-time PhD candidates to complete research work without needing.
After the thesis was delivered by a PhD student, he was sent to evaluate the external examiner.
After the evaluation report received from the examiner, the research supervisor must send a consolidated report to the University to facilitate Viva Voce for students.
While Viva-Voce must be made within six months after external examiners provide their evaluation reports, there is a delay of more than a year in some cases.
“There is no reason for the research guidance to delay Viva Voce when external examiners have given a report after evaluating the PhD’s thesis,” Kaliraj felt.
One step planned by the university to eliminate delays is to appoint research coordinators from universities in related disciplines.
The research coordinator will begin the Viva Voce process even if the research supervisor postpones the process.
This will facilitate Viva Voce’s behavior on time and provide a doctorate to scholars without delay.
Kaliraj has explained its purpose to eliminate delays during recent interactions with the Principal affiliated with the university where some scholars pursue a doctorate.
“We may not want to replace the research supervisor, but the research coordinator will step when there is a delay in conducting Viva Voce,” he said.
Some research scholars who face the delay to the TOI that research supervisors often postpone the process of completion of the PhD.
“Supervisors want to defend the para PhD scholar as long as possible so they can extract academic work done from them, “said a research scholar.
One PhD candidate from Coimbatore said that he was hesitant to carry out all academic works from the reviewer’s supervisor for giving him less time to focus on his research.
“My guide confirmed that my PhD work was dragged for more than 6 years until I got a special extension to complete my PhD’s work,” he said.
He said he could not take a problem with a university reaction that was afraid of my guide because it could put a PhD’s degree work.
Differences of opinion are another major factor that prevents the guidelines approve their student’s PhD work, according to scholars.
