Mucor waves triggered by steroids using receding

Mumbai: Mucormycosis, fungal infections that swept the country in the May-June period, saw 825 post-covid patients needed a ticket to various city hospitals and special injections for RS 18 Crore.
About 20% of these patients died of complications, and about two-thirds of them came from outside Mumbai.
While the “crisis of the Mucor” is to recede with almost one or two new acceptance on several days, 169 patients are still accepted in various government hospitals and state governments for free injections.
Every patient needs six injection bottles for 25 days.
“Since May 25, KEM Hospital, as the center of nodal in the city, receives and distributes 31,248 bottles of amphotericin B to patients registered in the city,” said KM Dean Dr.
Hemant Deshmukh Hospital.
Data available for 806 patients until last week showed 237 from Mumbai while 569 came from outside the city.
“About 30% of patients come from Mumbai,” said Dr.
Deshmukh.
Research conducted in patients with Musormycosis in the past three months shows that most of them suffer from diabetes and have received steroids as part of their covid treatment.
“We have found that every patient needs one to three operations but some with residual infections are still accepted at public hospitals,” said Dr.
Deshmukh.
As a private hospital charged more than Rs 20 lakh for all treatments, including operations, several patients were looking for acceptance to public hospitals such as KEM after undergoing partial treatments in the private sector.
Some public hospitals also use conventional B amphotericin, which spends a small portion of the newer, for younger patients.
“If we find that someone has a higher level of creatinine (kidney function indicator), then we will change it to the liposome b amphotericin,” said the doctor.
Meanwhile, the central government released data on Tuesday showing that since May 11 have distributed 8.14,323 bottles of amphotericin (liposomal) to various countries.
Of these, Maharashtra gets 1,52,770 injections.
The government also distributes 38,652 conventional amphotericin drugs; Of these, 9,190 was given to Maharashtra.
