Mumbai: Abhay Bavishi activist from Save Aarey Citizens Group was forcibly detained by the authorities to question the cutting of large peepal trees in the Gaothan area of Vile Parle (East) on Saturday.
The inheritance trees are said to be at least over 60 years cut by K-East BMC officials, despite the order of cutting trees in 2018.
Speaking with Toi, after being released from detention, Bavishi said: “I have gone to the site today after knowing that the tree Large peepal is a lot of almost 100 years old, it will be completely cut by K-East Ward officials.
City park officials, Jadhav Pradeep, have shown me the sequence of cutting trees which date in 2018.
I tried to negotiate with civilian officials that I myself had written Letters to BMC from 2017-18 not to cut this special tree.
Green activists are also carried out by RTI to find out why the inheritance trees in the Gaothan area in Vile Parle (east) can be destroyed.
“Bavavi further added:” Police officials served told me to go to the ward office to complain about the cutting of the tree.
However, I reasaled that when I was men Human, this grand old tree will be hacked to death.
That was when, the police were forcibly pushed me into their vehicle and took me to Mumbai’s domestic air terminal, while this tree was then cut from the main stem.
“Green activists are now written to BMC and also the Minister of Environment of Aditya Thackeray about the cutting of this illegal tree.” It looks like the cutting of illegal trees because the command to cut it is dated in 2018.
What is the need to hack it now, after almost four years, when the tree doesn’t block it whatever? It seems like some lobby builders want to get rid of this heritage tree to develop the Gaothan area.
It is very tragic that this big peepal tree cannot be saved, “said Green Zoru Bathena activist.
Another local activist Jude Dsouza, said:” Very suspicious why the Ward Civic office decided to carry out the 2018 order now.
Over the years, we also submitted RTIS about this problem to save this peepal tree; but do not receive the right formal reply.
We are now pleading for Minister of Environment Aditya Thackeray to take action against those who kill this heritage tree, because it is almost 100 years old.
“While the assistant Commissioner K-East Ward, Prashant Sapkale, not available for comments, Civic Park Officials, Pradeep Jadhav, told Toi:” I cannot comment on subject to this media.
You can contact the environment of the neighborhood in this case.
