Mumbai: Ten people killed in their sleep and one injured after the Illegal slums hutments located at an altitude of 500 feet on a hill in LBS Marg, Vikhroli (West), falling in a landslide after a very heavy rainfall on Sundays.
Four of the deceased were women, and men including two boys aged 11 and 19.
Death occurred in three families.
Data from the automatic civil weather station shows that 238 mm rainfall is recorded at Vikhroli between 11am on Saturday and 7 in the morning.
Officials said that the whole Surya Nagar Slum in Vikhroli (West) was home to around 35,000 people and illegal because it was located in the land of collectors.
Landslides occurred at around 2:40 a.m.
on Sunday when it rained refused to die, three hours after it began in his latest episode.
Rainwater began to accumulate in the area and did not find a way out.
While the locals said that the hill retaining wall had given the way, BMC officials said they found the retaining wall intact.
A civilian senior official on the site told TII that his team found that houses had been built illegally and even over the Nullah intended to drain rainwater.
Suresh Gupta, a local, said, “The retaining walls came crashing but BMC refused to accept this.
Our locals don’t have a place to go and therefore choose to stay here.
I see that rescue operations have proven difficult there there is no room to move Debris.
“At the accident site, rescuers find it difficult to move the body or even eliminate debris because the slum bag is very crowded.
Rescuers must stand in the chain so they can move the body and debris from one to another.
Many locals are regional residents to help rescue operations.
The situation is very trying, said one.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tweeted that RS 2 Lakh will be given to the next relatives of everyone who died (on the wall collapsing in Mumbai) from the National PM and RS 50,000 RS funds will be given to each person who was injured.
After the Vikhroli incident, BMC decided to shift around 40 local residents to civilian schools for a while.
From them, 30 came from the Vikhroli landslide zone and the remaining 10 of Bhandup.
Deputy Commissioner of the City of Devidas Kssasagar said, “In April, the regional inspection was held and the notice was issued informing the locals that they lived in the landslide prone area.
They were asked to empty.
We were also trapped in banners in the area.” Minister of Environment Minister of Environment Aaditya Thackeray , who visited the site, said, “We have talked about climate change and we can see how since the last few years we have witnessed extreme rainfall in a short period, which made it more difficult for the administration to handle.” Ward officials said that the city school It was identified and the locals requested to shift, but no one heeded paid in that direction.
But some say that such citizenship efforts need to be better organized and in a more convincing way so tragedy can be avoided.
