Mumbai: The economic wing of the Mumbai police arrested two people for allegedly deceiving Agro companies by collecting falsely for orders for turmeric and chili powder that had never been conveyed, causing RS 18 crore losses to the company.
On Tuesday, Unit 4 of EOW arrested a wholesaler from Sangli, Jahangir Maula Latif, along with the Purchasing Manager of a complainery company, Mohammed Gani Ismail.
Both were sent to police detention.
The complaint was submitted by the leading exporter of processed food products and agro commodities.
This registered the loss of 21% process in 2019, jumping from 5% in the previous year.
Audit for 2012 to 2019 shows that products have been transferred elsewhere.
Police said Ismail, who headed the Agro department, knew that Latif had deceived the company but did not tell the company’s head, and also tried to manipulate the office system.
Three other employees might know about fraud.
