Mumbai: BMC has canceled the Gargai Dam project which will save 4.5 lakh trees.
Head of BMC Iqbal Chahal said learning from the experience of two cyclones, BMC decided there was no point in cutting down 4.5 lakh trees to build a gargai dam and bring drinking water to Mumbai.
He said BMC had signed a memorandum of understanding with an Israeli company, idea, to establish desalination plants in Manori to change 1,800 million liters of sea water every day into drinking water.
“Pre-feasibility studies are carried out and we are in the process of preparing tenders.
This project will be assigned in 2024.
There will be phase II in the same place to change the same amount of sea water (1,800 mld) into drinking water,” he said.
In addition, Chahal said BMC had taken waste treatment plants.
“Six waste treatment plants that will convert 2,400 million liters of waste into drinking water every day are being arranged at a cost of rs 20,000 crore,” he said.
Waste treatment plants will be built with BMC resources.
“Desalination and waste processing plants will resolve mumbai drinking water problems permanently,” said the civil head.
