Mumbai: Bleeding, Sepsis, Hypertension Disorders and Tuberculosis for years are the main cause of maternal deaths in Mumbai.
But at 2020-21, Covid-19 has run through all to contribute to the biggest part of maternal death, according to data from BMC.
193 Analysis of Maternal Death in Mumbai Starting April 2020 to 2021 showed 16.5% due to complications arising from Covid-19.
Sepsis, life-threatening blood infection, coming in secondly contributing to 12% of death, TB and bleeding contributed 8.8% of each and heart disease to 4%, in accordance with RTI information collected by Chetan Kothari.
The overall mother mortality number in the city (193) fell 20% at 2020-21 compared to 2019-20 (241), perhaps because less delivery in the middle of the pandemic.

Analysis of causes of pre-covid 2019-20 shows that up to 12.5% of maternal deaths caused by bleeding, 10% hepatitis (10%), almost 8% sepsis and 7% by hypertension disorders.
The tuberculosis section of maternal death although it seems to have increased from 5% at pre-covid time to 8.8% at 2020-21.
BYL NAIR Hospital doctors say Covid does add lung complications and other organs in a small percentage of pregnant women.
“In our experience, most remains symptomatic and mild symptoms.
Many know that they have Covid at the time of delivery,” added the doctor.
The hospital has handled nearly 1,500 pregnancies since it was changed to the center appointed last April.
In the second wave, there has been a burst of death in pregnant women.
A total of 43 maternal deaths took place in April-May 2021, which 28, or 65%, had been caused by Covid-19.
According to Arun Nayak, the head of the gynecology at Sion Hospital, Covid can be a trigger factor in several cases, but there must be detailed research to understand whether the basic etiology of maternal mortality has changed.
“Traditionally, sepsis, bleeding, hypertension has occurred several most common causes and they continue to be tough,” he said.
Dr.
Nayak recommends vaccination of pregnant women so that even small death ratios can be avoided.
Some gynecologists believe pregnant women have the main threat from Covid and must be vaccinated on priority.
“The second wave has shown to our maternal mortality, complications, still birth and premature birth at least 7-8 times more in pregnant women.
People make mistakes by comparing covid events and death in pregnant women with a general population.
They must compare Pregnant women with covid women and pregnant without covid to understand the big difference in mortality, “said Dr.
Alpesh Gandhi, President of the Federation of Gynecology and Gynecology Gynecology (Fogsi).
