Mumbai: Traffic Police will establish more than 100 Nakabandi checkpoints throughout the city on December 31 to check drunk driving and other traffic violations.
“The strength of 56 officers and 500 police will be deployed on the streets on the western outskirts alone on New Year’s Eve.
Awareness campaigns ask people not to drink and drive will be laid out of crowded places such as beaches, malls, department stores and train stations .
The ‘safe driving’ mascot will appear in these locations between 6pm and midnight, “said DCP (traffic) nitin pawar.
With breathalysers not permitted because of the pandemic Covid-19, it would be a difficult task for the police to suspect drunken drivers to hospitals for blood alcohol tests.
“That doesn’t mean we will go easily on the offenders,” said a senior officer.
Thirty-Five Nakabandi Check-Post will be arranged on the western suburbs.
“All Covid-19 guidelines will be followed.
Those who wear helmets and follow the traffic rules will be grateful and key chains that are talented with the symbol of the traffic department.
Those who are found to break the rules will be given a bracelet that asks them to follow the rules other times,” The officer said.
