Mumbai saw the quietest idol procession in 18 years: NGO

Mumbai: This year’s ganpati soaking procession is even calmer than 2020, with almost no loudspeakers or other noisy instruments observed, the Awaaz Foundation Anti-noise campaigner campaigned in a report.
On Sunday, a temple bell was continuously sounded by one procession near the point of immersion of Haji Ali and the horns were constantly blown elsewhere.
The highest noise level of 93.1 decibel (DB) was recorded at the entry point of the symbolum chowpatty soaking site with the procession constantly blowing horns, finding surveys by NGOs.
In 2020, the highest level of noise was 100.7dB from the procession near Worli Dairy.
“Thanks to the arrangement carried out by the police, and with the collaboration of Ganpati Mandals not only protecting health and the environment in the Covid-19 pandemic, but also to reduce the noise pollution, making it the calm in 18 years since Awaaz Foundation began recording the noise level,” Sumaira Abdul Ali from the foundation said in his letter to CM Uddhav Thackeray and Minister of Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray.
NGOs have measured noise from various sources including political festivals and demonstrations since 2003.
